What is mediation?

A fair, private way to work it out together.

Independent mediation helps people work through disagreements, understand each other's concerns and explore a workable agreement.

My approach is calm, practical and impartial. I prepare each party, then facilitate constructive conversations where everyone has an opportunity to be heard, and help you explore options and work towards a mutually acceptable agreement. What you agree, if anything, is entirely your choice.

Mediation is private and without prejudice. How confidentiality works, and its limited exceptions, is agreed in writing before we begin.

How it can help

Less weight to carry, and a way forward.

When a disagreement has stalled, a structured conversation with an impartial person in the room can make it possible to move on.

Everyone is heard

Everyone gets a fair chance to be heard, starting with time on your own with me before the joint session.

An impartial process

I stay impartial and help you explore options together, explaining each step as we go.

Your agreement, your words

If you reach an agreement, I write it up in your own words. You're welcome to get independent legal advice before you sign.

My approach

Independent, impartial and caring.

This is your process, and what comes out of it is up to you. You choose what you share and when.

INDEPENDENT

Everyone gets a fair chance to be heard.

IMPARTIAL

I stay impartial and help you explore options together.

CARING

You keep ownership of the decision.

How mediation works

Five steps, explained as we go.

It's voluntary, and there's no pressure to go ahead.

The other person hasn't agreed yet?

With your permission, I can reach out to them for you. I'll explain how it works and answer their questions, and they're free to say no.

  1. A first conversation

We talk through what's going on and whether mediation could help. It's voluntary, and there's no pressure to go ahead. If the other person hasn't agreed yet, I can reach out to them for you, with your permission. I'll explain how it works and answer their questions, and they're free to say no.

  2. Agreeing how we'll work

Before anything starts, the plan, confidentiality and fees are put in writing so everyone knows what to expect.

  3. Time with each person

I meet with each person on their own, to hear what matters to them and help them feel ready for the conversation.

  4. The mediation

Everyone gets a fair chance to be heard. I stay impartial and help you explore options together. What you agree, if anything, is entirely your choice.

  5. Putting it in writing

If you reach an agreement, I write it up in your own words. You're welcome to get independent legal advice before you sign.

Confidentiality

Private, and without prejudice.

We'll agree all of this in writing before we begin.

Mediation is private and without prejudice, which means:

  • The process is confidential, and what's said generally can't be taken into court or other formal processes
  • Anything you tell me in a one-to-one meeting stays with me unless you agree I can share it, subject to the exceptions below
  • Everyone involved must agree in writing to keep what's discussed within the mediation and not discuss it with people outside it
  • The only exceptions are the limited ones set out in our written agreement, such as where the law requires it, someone's safety is at serious risk, or there's serious criminality

We'll agree all of this in writing before we begin

Mediation preparation checklist

A one-page guide to getting ready. It includes questions worth thinking about before we meet, such as:

  • What's actually important to me here?
  • What would reaching an agreement look like for me, and where could I be flexible?
  • If we don't reach an agreement, what would that mean for me afterwards?
